Anamosa
State Penitentiary Museum - Iowa
The Anamosa State Penitentiary Museum showcases the 132-year history of
Iowa's largest prison, the Anamosa State Penitentiary. The museum offers
displays describing prison life, the “guard” through the years, and a
large variety of photographs from the prison's early days.
One of three remaining examples of the "Lazy Susan" jails, this
three-story brick structure was completed in 1885 and featured a "cage"
that rotated to allow jailers a view of all cells from a single vantage
point. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
