Andersonville, or Camp Sumter as it was officially known, was
one of the largest of many Confederate military prisons
established during the Civil War. Today, Andersonville National
Historic Site is the only park in the National Park System to
serve as a memorial to all American prisoners of war throughout
the nation's history.
The Crime and Punishment Museum traces the history of Georgia’s
penal system from the opening of the first state prison in 1811
to Georgia’s current penal system which has grown to become the
eighth largest prison system in the country with 32 prisons.
